WUKA Announces Mermaids as their Charity of The Year to Promote More Sustainable and Inclusive Period Care

WUKA is supporting Mermaids, one of the UK’s leading trans youth charities, as its official charity of the year today, 28th March 2022.

Making period comfort accessible, inclusive and sustainable to all, including the trans, gender fluid and non-binary communities, is a priority for WUKA. They want to support Mermaids to help in the charity’s efforts to provide support and advice for everyone who experiences periods. Made using cruelty-free and eco-friendly fabrics, WUKA’s reusable and leak-proof period pants can completely replace pads and tampons.

£1 from every WUKA Ultimate™ boxer shorts purchased will go to Mermaids. This will help fund Mermaids’ vital work including its secure online communities, local community groups, helpline services, web resources, events and residential weekends.

Ruby Raut (she/her), CEO and founder of WUKA, says: “We at WUKA believe that gendered barriers to period comfort should be broken down. We want to make period comfort accessible to the trans, gender fluid and non-binary communities, and be a platform that can support everyone. Having Mermaids as our chosen charity will provide invaluable opportunities to deepen our understanding, better educate ourselves and raise awareness.”

Bex Shorunke (she/her), PR and Media Engagement Manager at Mermaids, said: “Mermaids is thrilled to have been chosen by WUKA as their charity partner of the year. We pride ourselves on celebrating and supporting trans, gender-diverse and non-binary children, young people, and their families, and we’re excited to partner with a brand that shares our commitment to inclusivity. It’s essential that young people who have periods have access to the products they need, that’s why we’re delighted WUKA will be gifting us with their products at our events for our young people. We are also really thankful that they will be donating some of their profits to Mermaids, as this helps to ensure we can continue doing the important work we are doing for our community.”

About WUKA
Founded in 2017 by husband and wife team, Ruby Raut and Dave Slocombe, WUKA is the UK’s leading period wear brand and was the first in the UK to produce fully leak-proof reusable period underwear that completely replaces the need for pads and tampons. Just one pair of WUKA period pants can save 200 single-use plastic-riddled disposables from going to landfill or polluting our oceans.

WUKA stands for Wake Up Kick Ass; because nothing should hold women back when on their period. The brand strives to empower the menstruating population, improve access to quality, sustainable period products, eliminate period poverty, and remove period shame and stigma.

Offering a range of award-winning undies to suit different menstrual flows, WUKA period pants hold from two to six tampons worth of period blood; the highest absorbency of any other period products. They are also available in the most extensive range of sizes on the market – from XXS, right up to 6XL.

WUKA also offers period leggings, period sports shorts, period swim bikini briefs, and a number of period accessories and gifts, including a wearable hot water bottle, wash bags, period wellness sets, and starter kits for tweens and teens.

All WUKA products are mindfully created, using the highest quality planet-friendly fabrics, to be both great for the body and good for the environment. From the Better Cotton Initiative, Organic Certified, to Vegan, PETA approved and certified Carbon Neutral+, WUKA underwear is all accredited and designed with the future in mind. Equality, inclusivity, and social & environmental responsibility are at the heart of everything WUKA does.

WUKA is available in Morrisons, Superdrug, Planet Organic, Urban Outfitters, and a range of independent zero waste and fashion retailers. You can also purchase WUKA products direct from the WUKA website.
