UK Travellers Embrace Rail-Led Short Breaks as Trip.com Bookings Rise Nearly 50%

Trip.com data shows growing demand for simple, good-value domestic rail trips. Trip.Planner helps travellers build complete itineraries around popular UK destinations.
London, 14 May 2026 – Trip.com, the international one-stop travel provider, has revealed that its UK rail bookings are up nearly 50% year-on-year so far in 2026, following a year of strong momentum in 2025, when rail ticket bookings on the platform doubled compared with the previous year.
The growth highlights rising demand among UK travellers for easy, affordable ways to plan and book journeys across the country, with Trip.com data showing strong interest in shorter, well-connected routes as travellers prioritise ease, value and flexibility. This is also reflected in hotel booking data, with bookings to leading UK destinations up year-on-year between January and April 2026, led by Birmingham (+92%) and Cambridge (+89%).
Rather than planning one major holiday, travellers are increasingly spreading trips across the year – opting for multiple shorter breaks that are easier to organise and fit around busy schedules. Trip.com hotel data shows these trips are typically short and locally planned, with travellers staying one to two nights and booking around two to four weeks ahead. From seaside weekends in Brighton to food-led breaks in Manchester and culture-filled stays in Edinburgh, demand is being driven by destinations that are quick to reach, good value and easy to organise.
As UK travellers look for quicker and easier ways to organise trips, there is growing demand for platforms that allow them to plan entire journeys in one place, from transport and accommodation to activities and experiences. Trip.com data shows that more than 10,000 UK rail orders to the shortlisted destinations in early 2026 were paired with a hotel booking in the same city, showing how travellers are using the platform to plan complete domestic breaks rather than just one part of the journey.
Where to go now: the UK’s most in-demand rail getaways
Whether it’s a last-minute seaside escape, a spontaneous city break or a culture-filled long weekend, travellers are choosing destinations that can be reached quickly and with minimal planning. Booking data shows strong demand across these routes, reflecting a wider shift towards short, car-free, easy-to-plan rail travel.
Booking data highlights several of the UK’s most in-demand rail routes right now, including:
- London to Edinburgh: for culture, festivals and long-weekend breaks
- London to Manchester: for food, nightlife and vibrant city stays
- London to Birmingham: for accessible, value-driven short breaks
- London to Brighton: for classic seaside escapes, with strong ongoing demand for quick coastal getaways
- London to Oxford and Cambridge: for quick, under-two-hour day trips
These routes reflect a broader shift in Trip.com booking data towards short-haul, high-impact travel, where convenience and flexibility are becoming key decision drivers.
Leisure-led destinations such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and York also see a higher share of rail bookings paired with hotel stays, reinforcing their role as overnight and weekend-break destinations.
Plan it in one go: from train to experiences
As UK travellers look for quicker and easier ways to organise trips, there is growing demand for platforms that allow them to plan entire journeys in one place, from transport and accommodation to activities and experiences. Trip.com data shows that more than 10,000 UK rail orders to the shortlisted destinations in early 2026 were paired with a hotel booking in the same city, showing how travellers are using the platform to plan complete domestic breaks rather than just one part of the journey.
“Rail is becoming a natural starting point for short domestic breaks in the UK, as travellers look for trips that are easy to plan, good value and simple to fit around busy schedules. What we’re seeing on Trip.com is that customers are not only booking the journey, but increasingly building the full trip around it, from hotels to experiences, and our focus is on making that easier to do in one place,” said Fred Fishlock, Country Head UK at Trip.com.
But the opportunity for travellers increasingly goes beyond the journey itself. With Trip.Planner, Trip.com users can turn a simple rail booking into a fuller travel plan, building itineraries around attractions, restaurants, hotels and local experiences in one place. From historic university towns and coastal escapes to longer city breaks in destinations such as Edinburgh, the platform helps travellers move from booking a ticket to shaping a complete UK break.
With strong growth continuing into 2026, rail is becoming an increasingly central part of the UK travel mix, offering a practical and accessible way for travellers to explore more of the UK with ease.
