Cruise Expert and CEO of Ambassador Cruise Line, Christian Verhounig, Shares 2026 Cruise Trends RoosterPR

As the cruise industry continues its course through 2026, a new wave of trends is emerging, reshaping the way travellers experience the high seas.

With a growing demand for value for money, astrotourism, nostalgications, sustainability and more – the future of cruising is bright. To keep up with ever-changing guest needs, cruise lines across the globe are embracing a new era of travel that caters to a diverse range of passions and preferences.

Cruise expert and CEO of Ambassador Cruise Line, Christian Verhounig, has over 25 years’ experience in the industry – starting his career as a waiter working on a cruise ship and rising through the ranks before working in a variety of senior management positions. Incorporating his vast industry expertise and deep knowledge of guests’ needs, Christian shares his top trends for 2026, offering a glimpse of the transformative offerings that will define the next season of cruising.

  • Early booking boom

While there will always be demand for last-minute deals, we’ve seen a significant shift towards early bookings, with guests planning well in advance of the departure date when availability is high, particularly for longer voyages.

Planning ahead is especially beneficial for no-fly cruises, as these itineraries – offering unique access to destinations like the Norwegian World Heritage fjords (which Ambassador’s smaller ships are able to access unlike larger, less environmentally friendly vessels) or the Caribbean – are incredibly popular. As such, this growing ‘early booking’ trend led us to launch our 2026/27 season five months earlier than previous years to cater for early demand, offering the widest choice of cabins, durations and regional departures.

Those who plan ahead enjoy the best selection of accommodation, preferred dining options and the reassurance of securing their ideal voyage at the earliest opportunity. With more ex-UK sailings than any other cruise line, embarking from a port that’s close to home with a minimum of hassle has never been easier.

  • Wallet-friendly winter sun

The desire for warm weather destinations combined with the need to get the best value for money is a trend that shows no signs of waning. Cruise lines that offer affordable yet memorable itineraries, with a mix of inclusive amenities, destination experiences and flexible pricing being the preference.

Winter sun destinations have long been popular with people craving warmth, blue skies and longer days as an antidote to the British winter, but the value offered by cruising is a comparatively new concept for many travellers.

Ambassador’s cruise ships offer a taste of authentic, traditional sailing in an environment where it is easy for guests to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones or simply enjoy precious ‘me time’. Nothing is compulsory and everything moves at a pace to enjoy as our guests see fit, from gourmet dining in specialty restaurants to engaging talks from subject experts, cooking classes to crafting sessions, West End-style entertainment to guest musical acts, ‘In Conversation With…’ talks and more. In any other holiday setting, the cost of enjoying this amazing range of quality entertainment prohibitive – and that’s without factoring-in refreshments along the way. On an Ambassador sailing, however, it’s all part of the package.

Launched in October 2025, the ongoing success of our first ever Caribbean fly-cruise season during the winter season is testament to this trend. These sailings are aboard Renaissance, which joined the fleet following Ambassador’s merger with French cruise operator Compagnie Française de Croisières in early 2025, with Barbados, Saint Lucia, Antigua and Grenada as top destinations. Each itinerary has been carefully curated to celebrate Renaissance’s smaller size and the opportunities it provides to offer the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation and cultural immersion. With a host of exciting winter itineraries through to the end of March before beginning again in October 2026 for a second winter season, Renaissance allows us to reinforce our commitment to offering our guests the very best affordable quality experiences and a greater selection of sailings and destinations than ever before.

  • Astrotourism

Few natural wonders capture the imagination quite like the Northern Lights. Witnessing the aurora’s dance of colour across the Arctic sky from the deck of a cruise ship is an experience unlike any other and one that travellers want to experience. Crucially, this year will also bring a total solar eclipse (12 August) to the northern hemisphere.

Travellers who want to experience these astronomical events first-hand are searching for the best viewing spots and are becoming increasingly aware of the advantages that cruise ships offer in this regard. Crucially, ships can adjust their position to try to achieve optimum viewing conditions, in the path of totality in some cases, as well as offer unobstructed views away from crowds, allowing guests to take in the magnitude of this once in a lifetime event.

The Ambassador no-fly fleet will be perfectly positioned for the August eclipse, offering guests a rare opportunity to witness this remarkable phenomenon while exploring some of the most stunning regions in the world. Its flagship, Ambience, will be in the Bay of Biscay during the 10-night Multi-Generational Adventure to France & Spain and the Solar Eclipse – the last Multigen before Ambassador goes fully adult-only from 2026 onwards – while the 13-night Iceland’s Land of Ice & Fire and the Solar Eclipse aboard Ambassador’s second lady of the sea will see Ambition positioned just off the coast of Greenland, very close to the path of totality.

  • Nostalgications

The package holiday and low-cost airline boom in the 1980s opened up much of Europe to Brits for the first time, with Spain and Greece benefiting from the influx of British holidaymakers wanting guaranteed sunshine for their annual two-week break. While the world is much more accessible now, we are seeing a boomerang effect on these classic destinations, with itineraries to the Canary Islands proving particularly popular. The added appeal of cruising is clear – step aboard in the UK and wake up under the sun without the hassle of airport queues, baggage restrictions and flight disruptions.

However, it’s not just destinations that are proving a hit for people looking to enjoy a ‘nostalgication’. Looking ahead, we’re also offering a ‘Back to the 70s’ sailing aboard Ambition in April 2026, where guests can groove to disco hits and enjoy themed parties as they sail across the North Sea to Zeebrugge. Not to mention the ‘Back to the 80s’ sailing from Bristol in November 2026, featuring lively cabaret shows, ‘80s-inspired quizzes, fancy-dress competitions, retro workout classes, menus celebrating classic era favourites and guest appearances from 80s icons including Carol Decker of T’Pau and Samatha Fox.

  • Sustainable travel

Thanks to a growing understanding of the importance of protecting native ecosystems and wildlife, supporting local communities and the need to reduce emissions and promote sustainable practices, sustainable travel options will continue to grow in popularity in 2026.

Sustainability is one of Ambassador’s core values, which is why our energy-efficient fleet of small-to-mid-size ships are (IMO) Tier III compliant, putting them in the top 15% of sustainable ships worldwide. This means that the fleet is able to access some of the world’s best-kept secrets in the most environmentally friendly (and affordable) way possible – such as the Norwegian World Heritage Fjords.
We also partner with marine conservation charity ORCA, with ocean conservationists joining guests onboard Ambience and Ambition to collect important scientific data aimed at protecting sea life including whales, dolphins and porpoises, while delivering interactive talks, workshops and deck watches that help guests make the most of every sighting. An integral part of the ORCA partnership also includes the training and education of crew, especially our navigation officers.

In 2025, ORCA recorded 6,766 animal sightings across Ambassador voyages, with stand-out encounters that included orca, humpback, sperm whales and the rarely seen beaked whales. In 2026, ORCA’s marine conservationists will spend 200 days at sea aboard Ambassador’s no-fly itineraries, visiting key ports of call that hold significant value to the charity. These sailings will help fill crucial gaps in sea life population monitoring, providing essential data to further ORCA’s efforts in protecting marine animals.
