The Sun Shines Year-Round in Cyprus
Winter is on its way…but that doesn’t mean you need to travel long-haul to fulfil your sunshine fix. Only 4.5 hours from the UK and with over 300 days of guaranteed sunshine, Cyprus is a top winter break destination thanks to its climate, delicious food, fantastic crowd-free beaches and legendary hospitality.
Here the Cyprus Tourism Organisation shares its top activities for a wonderfully warm escape:
Hiking in the Troodos Mountains is popular all year due to the stunning scenery but is particularly spectacular during the winter months when the sun is warm, but lower in the sky. Some of the most beautiful hikes include the Akamas Peninsula and the Caledonia Falls Trail, a 3km forest hike renowned for its breath-taking views and impressive waterfall.
Cyprus boasts the cleanest bathing waters in Europe and now has 64 Blue Flag beaches (widely considered the top accolade when it comes to beach quality). In fact, TripAdvisor name Cyprus’ Fig Tree Bay beach as number 13 its round up of the best beaches in the world for 2018. With water sports aplenty and many beaches perfectly situated near local amenities, tourists will be spoilt for choice when picking a sunbathing spot.
Home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites that can be enjoyed throughout the year; Cyprus has a rich cultural heritage. As well as its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, travellers can visit ‘Aphrodite’s Rock’ – the fabled birthplace of Aphrodite – and the Baths of Aphrodite, a secluded pool where the goddess is said to have seduced Apollo.
There is also plenty for families to do year-round in Cyprus. The island has some of Europe’s largest themed waterparks, go-karting and mini golf courses, zoos, rock climbing and horse riding schools, local handicraft workshops for all ages, rope parks, theme parks, water sports across the coastline and kayaking at rivers and dams.
Animal-lovers have plenty of entertainment options too: camel and ostrich parks, horse riding at family-run riding schools and Bio Farms to feed the animals and see how sustainable family run farms are run.
Beat the crowds
With many tourists flocking to the isle for their summer holiday, winter can be less crowded and activities may be easier to take part in. With shorter ques, those who long to explore at a calmer, more peaceful pace, should most definitely push Cyprus to the top of their winter bucket lists escape!
