El Gouna & Egyptian Tourist Authority to Host Miss Scuba UK 2014

Competition promotes marine conservation and responsible scuba diving.

The Red Sea town of El Gouna, a diver’s paradise offering clear warm waters and an abundance of reefs, wrecks and flourishing marine wildlife, and the Egyptian Tourist Authority (ETA), are set to welcome the finalists of Miss Scuba UK 2014, a competition which aims to promote safe diving practices and highlight the importance of marine conservation.

Taking place from 26 April to 3 May 2014, the competition is the brainchild of scuba diver and conservation devotee, Robert Lo, owner of the Sipadan Mabul Resort in Malaysia, who established the event as part of the Miss Scuba International competition. The event will see the 10 finalists put through a series of water-based and scuba diving related rounds, including a three-day scuba diving PADI certification course, free-diving, swimming with dolphins and a finathon.

Under the guidance of Kat Felton, PADI scuba instructor, Project AWARE ambassador, free-diver and professional mermaid, one of the events will require the finalists to race in mermaid outfits as part of the competition’s support of marine conservation and Project AWARE’s ‘Sharks in Peril’ campaign to end shark finning. Supporting the Project AWARE Finathon™ challenge, the race will raise much-needed funds and awareness of this important cause.

Utilising the facilities in El Gouna, the finalists will stay at Club Paradisio hotel and use Colona Divers at the Rihana Resort. In addition to being sponsored by El Gouna and ETA, Miss Scuba UK 2014 has partnered with EgyptAir, PADI and Aqua Lung.

“Given El Gouna’s reputation as a world-class diving destination for all skill levels we were naturally delighted to host this event, which not only promotes marine conservation but also provides a platform to encourage a wider audience to try diving for the first time,” commented Jens Freise, VP Sales and Marketing for Destinations & Hotels in Orascom Development, developers of El Gouna.

The reigning Miss Scuba International and winner of the first Miss Scuba UK competition in November 2013, Jaime-Lee Faulkner, will be on hand to assist the finalists through the 12 rounds in El Gouna prior to presenting the Miss Scuba UK 2014 her crown during the final gala evening. The winner will then go on to Miss Scuba International, held in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, on 28 November 2014.
