LAAX’s Much-Loved Descent of The Cows Festival Returns this September

LAAX’s Much-Loved Descent of The Cows Festival Returns this September
25 August 2022 Samantha Anderson

The Swiss alpine resort of LAAX has announced the return of the much-loved annual Descent of the Cows Festival on Saturday 17 September, an iconic tradition not to be missed.

Alpabzug Flimserstein, or the Descent of the Cows, is a centuries old festival held in September each year. After the cows have spent the summer on lush pastures high in the mountains, the cattle drive back to the valley tasks place against a breathtaking mountainous backdrop.

Over 100 beautifully decorated cows in floral garlands and bouquets are driven down the Scala Mola, over the steep and exposed terrain, into the high valley of Bargis, from there they are led back into the valley via Fidaz to Flims.

Locals and guests alike can experience a full day of traditional activities; following a bus shuttle from Flims Dorf Post to Bargis, guests can start the day with a delicious brunch called Burra Z’morga – a farmer’s breakfast, consisting of eggs, bacon, cheeses, and milk, produces from farm itself; served by the farming family in local huts until 11am.

Between 10am – 3pm, guests will celebrate with the Flims farmers high up on Bargis plateau, where they can enjoy fantastic views of the mountains, as well as a feast of local dishes for lunch, including cheese risotto, salsiz, cake and many other farm specialties. Meanwhile children can experience a Swiss tradition of a unique style of wrestling supervised by the Flims swing club, and adults can soak up the music and festivities; with market stalls selling local produce from 11am, there’s plenty for young and old to enjoy.

From 12.30pm the cows will arrive at Bargis, and from 3pm they’re led down the valley by famers to Flims; festival goers can follow the parade on foot, or return down the valley by shuttle bus.

Tickets to book Burra Z’morga, hosted by the Attenhofer family (departing Flims Dorf Post by shuttle bus at 8.30am): Adults CHF 59 | Children 11 – 16 years CHF 39 | Children 6 – 10 years CHF 20 | Under 6 Free

Pre-sale bus ticket prices: Adults CHF 24 | Children 6 – 16 years CHF 12 | Under 6 Free (though seats must be booked in advance)
