Into the Night with LAAX

Into the Night with LAAX
27 January 2022 James Brooke

Sundown doesn’t have to just mean après in the bustling mountain resort of LAAX. Attracting freestyle skiers and snowboarders from all over the world, LAAX extends its winter season offering into the later hours, with a selection of nighttime activities available such as walking routes, sledging or skiing after sun set.

The evening itinerary has been created with every ability in mind, LAAX’s nighttime activity guide offers an option for every visitor keen to get out under the starry skies for some mountain fun.

Here are five of LAAX’s top night activities to try out this Winter season:

Snow Shoeing

For the first time this winter, two snowshoe hiking routes have opened between Falera and Curnius for nighttime voyagers. For those looking to gather some pace on a more aerobic exploration of the peaks by foot, snowshoeing offers the perfect option. Advanced hikers can bring their snowshoes and head torches, on selected days in February and March, to ascend the 4 km route, before warming up with a hot drink and fueling their tummies with local food in the Tegia Curnius restaurant.

Guests can rent snowshoes from LAAX’s rental shops from as little as £16 for half a day.

Guided Tour Under the Light of the Moon

For the advanced skiers and snowboarders of the group, this guided descent takes place across the six nights of the full moon in the peak winter season (ending 18 March). Beginning the journey with a gondola ride up the mountain to enjoy the panoramic views from Crap Sogn Gion base, skiers are treated to a 3-course meal in the Capalari restaurant. At 9pm, the mountain safety team leads the descent towards the valleys, as the moon lights up the grounds.

Prices begin at approximately £68 per person.

Walking LAAX’s Lantern Lit Path

Lighting the way through the darkness, over 300 lanterns illuminate LAAX’s lantern trail, creating a serene and peaceful surrounding to escape the action-packed buzz of adrenaline-fuelled activities. Accessible for all fitness levels, including families with young children, this one hour walk spans across a 3.6km distance from Falera to LAAX, winding through the iconic snowy landscapes of the Swiss mountains, lit up in the winter night. As it strikes 6pm the lanterns alight until 9pm, allowing guests to enjoy wandering the path at their desired time, with no cost to pay.

Walk duration: One hour. 3.6 km.

Night Sledging

For the night owls of the group, the sun setting doesn’t have to mean cozying up inside, with the action only just getting started on the Foppa to Flims sledge runs. Open from the end of December to March guests can take to the slopes for a sledging ride under the star-lit skies, before enjoying the culinary delights at the Berghaus Foppa at the mountain station in Foppa and the Legna Bar at the valley station in Flims.

Prices range from just over £5.50 for children to £16 for adults and can be booked online.

Nighttime Cross-Country Skiing

Providing visitors with an extra 2.5 – 4km to try out, until 9.30pm on selected days, nighttime self-guided cross-country skiing offers guests the ultimate freedom to independently explore the tracks. With fewer people on the trails, less distraction, and no chance of getting sunburn goggle marks, night-time cross-country skiing has proved a popular option at LAAX. Making for a great time to perfect your technique, those who are hoping to go that extra distance can opt for the cross-country trails in Trin and Sagogn. Being the basis of the cross-country school, these trails are fit for beginners as well as the more experienced cross-country skiers.

Prices start at approximately £9.60 a day for adults, whilst kids up to 16 years of age can join completely free of charge. Tickets can be booked directly on site or at the tourist information Centre.
