Swiss Ski Resort, LAAX, Opens Newest Natural Snow Park: Free60

Swiss Ski Resort, LAAX, Opens Newest Natural Snow Park: Free60
20 January 2022 James Brooke
  • The original freestyle resort in the Swiss Alps, just 90-minutes’ drive from Zurich
  • 18 new obstacles including ramps, rails, bridges, pillows, and pale jams
  • Free60’s opening brings the total number of snow parks in LAAX to five

The Swiss ski resort of LAAX, home to the longest half-pipe in the world and often referred to as the Mecca of freestyle, has announced its fifth world-class snow park: Free60. The natural park will feature two adjacent runs and will be located on an ungroomed slope with a total of 18 obstacles, including ramps, rails, bridges, pillows and pale jams.

Beginning at GALAAXY at Crap Sogn Gion (the main hub of the resort), Free60 will run to Plaun and will open to free skiers and snowboarders at the end of January (dependent on snowfall). Free60 is the addition to P60, LAAX’s beloved freestyle park with over 89 obstacles which launched in 2010.

Free60 combines two of LAAX’s hallmarks, freestyle and powder. Wooden obstacles were put into position before the first snow fell this season, ready to be snowed in with fresh powder, perfect for beginners and experienced freestylers. Come the summer months, the obstacles are removed and the area and slopes are returned to the grazing cattle.

Joos Caviezel, Snowpark Manager in LAAX said “The Free60 is a novum to the Swiss Freestyle scene and we’re proud to present our guests with something different each year. Free60 is for experienced riders who want to up their game off piste and love shredding powder.”

Built entirely from natural materials sourced sustainably from the local forest, using 25m3 of tree trunks and 10m3 of wooden boards, Free60 forms part of LAAX’s commitment to the Greenstyle initiative.

As freestylers will know, wax is a must for boards and skis; visitors will be encouraged to use LAAX’s new unproblematic, biodegradable wax before heading to the pistes and parks. In contrast to conventional petroleum-based, fluorine waxes, which take 100,000 years to decompose and are now detectable in Swiss cows’ milk, LAAX’s plant-based wax biodegrades easily, causing less harm to the local flora and fauna. The biodegradable wax is already available for purchase at LAAX Rental.

Free60 will be included in the price of a day ski pass and open from 8:30am – 4:45pm every day. Prices for a day pass can be found below:

  • Adult day pass: 55 Swiss Francs
  • Youth day pass: 37 Swiss Francs
  • Child day pass: 19 Swiss Francs
