Launching today (Tuesday 13 September), Breadwinners is a new ground-breaking charity offering those struggling to find employment an opportunity to start their own fresh bread delivery business.

Londoners can wake up to fresh, award-winning artisan bread delivered directly to their door at no extra cost to what they’d pay in the bakery. Customers book delivery with their local Breadwinner by entering their postcode at Delivered from top local London bakeries, customers will enjoy delicious, beautifully made bread and pastries, with every penny of profit going towards their local Breadwinners.

The charity has partnered with two local bakeries from launch:
One of London’s leading producers of multi- award-winning artisan bread, Celtic Bakers lovingly hand-crafts loaves, cakes and pastries which are found in the most discerning top restaurants, hotels, delicatessens and food halls. London-based GAIL’s artisan bakery specialises in craft bread and reinventing the way Londoners think about fresh, handmade bread and their local bakery.

On Friday (16 September) Breadwinners is launching a free fresh bread delivery campaign in London. By tweeting your post code and #BreadStart to @WeBreadwinners you can be in with a chance to receive free fresh bread delivered direct to your work or home.*

Tapping into the growing demand for high quality food deliveries, the freshly baked bread or pastries are delivered by bicycle straight to the customer’s home or work at a time convenient for them. There is no minimum order and no delivery charge, just beautiful, fresh bread delivered from their local bakery.

Championed by the renowned organic mill, Shipton Mill, Breadwinners has partnered with established, pioneering bakeries in London who share a passion for ‘real bread’ and social change. Each handpicked for the exceptional quality of their products, the bakeries produce bread and pastries made fresh on the day with expert care, skill and love, using traditional baking methods, 100% natural ingredients and absolutely no additives and preservatives.

Empowering London’s unemployed
The Breadwinners Foundation has been set up to systematically address the issues surrounding unemployment in disadvantaged communities. The charity aims to provide an innovative business model for the unemployed, providing all the training, microfinance and equipment they need in the knowledge that:

  • 40 percent of unemployed adults are under the age of 25¹
  • Youth unemployment is still higher than pre-recession levels, and young people are unemployed for longer. 16 percent of unemployed 16-24 year olds had been unemployed for over 12 months in June 2016²
  • 77 percent of homeless people seeking shelter in London hostels actively want to work³
  • Despite actively searching for over 21 months, 50 percent of 18-34 year old refugees struggle to find employment ⁴

Marika Chaplais, Project Director of Breadwinners Foundation said: “A lack of opportunity, understanding and an unfair recruitment process forces thousands of people into low pay and long term unemployment. Stuck at the bottom of the labour market, there is often no way out. Breadwinners, Shipton Mill and our pioneering partner bakeries are working together to not only offer jobs to those struggling to find employment, but a chance for them to really take back control of their lives and finances, learn transferable skills, and create a business they can grow, invest in and be proud of.”

The Breadwinners
Referred by partner charities such as St Mungos, Café from Crisis, and Refugee Council, the Breadwinners attend a carefully crafted training programme in which they learn how to set up as self-employed, how to manage finances, food health and safety, cycling maintenance, customer service and marketing. After being paired with a handpicked artisan bakery, the Breadwinner is given a place on the Breadwinners website and all equipment is provided including a bike and trailer, waterproofs, lights and lock and marketing materials. After receiving their first 50 loaves free of charge, the Breadwinners are able to buy loaves at cost price from the bakeries, keeping all profit to reinvest and grow their business. They are then given their own mentor and ongoing support from Breadwinners Foundation.

How it works
Breadwinners are referred by partner charities and given training as well as all equipment needed to set up their own bread delivery business. Every Breadwinner is paired with a handpicked artisan bakery partner who shares the same passion for the highest quality ingredients and social change
As customers order, the Breadwinners buy freshly made loaves from the bakery at cost price and sell them for a profit at no extra cost to the customer. By keeping every penny of the profit, the Breadwinner has the opportunity to reinvest and grow their business.

Choosing from a selection of loaves and pastries, Londoners can either order a one-off delivery or opt to sign up for a subscription that is 100 percent flexible to pause or cancel.

Breadwinners is launching initially with Tim, the first Breadwinner mentor, covering areas in the following London post codes: EC1, EC2, EC3, EC4, E1W, E1, E2, E3, E5, E8, E9, E15, E20, N1, N4, N5 and N16. New Breadwinners are already taking part in the training programme ready to start within the next few weeks and the foundation plans to roll-out across London regions over the next 12 months. Each new Breadwinner will have their own mentor like Tim to help them get started.
