PLAY Makes Hire with Director of Sustainability and CSR
5 November 2021 James Brooke

PLAY, the new low-cost Icelandic airline, has made a senior hire in Rakel Eva Sævarsdóttir, the company’s Director of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Rakel Eva will play a leading role to implement the company’s sustainability and CSR strategies, defining its goals related to environmental issues, governance, and operation policy.

Joining PLAY from renowned multi-national food company Marel where she focused on sustainability with main responsibilities within the fish industry. Prior to that Rakel Eva was a manager at Deloitte Iceland where she was involved in building a new service line within sustainability consulting.

Rakel Eva was also one of the founders of Fortuna Invest, an initiative on Instagram intended to increase diversity in the financial markets, specifically through greater participation of women, by providing information on investment through innovative methods. In her new role, Rakel Eva will apply her vision and experience to further develop PLAY’s sustainability.

PLAY will lead by example in sustainability and CSR

“PLAY intends to lead by example in sustainability and CSR as these issues are becoming ever more important to us as a business and as people. Customers, investors, and the PLAY team all believe this is a priority in today’s environment.

“As a business, PLAY has a unique opportunity to prioritize sustainability in CSR right from the start since the company is young and just beginning to grow. We are therefore lucky to get Rakel Eva aboard as she has been a trustworthy advocate of these issues. I am excited to see her take action,” said Birgir Jónsson, CEO of PLAY.

“The airline industry has rarely been as interesting as now, when it faces considerable challenges and opportunities related to sustainability. The airlines that intend to be competitive in the next five to ten years will have to tackle these issues with great responsibility and set clear and measurable goals in the field. PLAY intends to lead in this field, so I am clearly very excited, and proud, to have been offered to partake in this journey with this amazing group of people,” says Rakel Eva.

Rakel Eva will be joining PLAY in early November.
