Chief Adventurer of CamperDays, Max Schmidt, shares his top five UK road trips for the October half term.

While we are all sad to see the end of summer, many may be looking forward to cosy nights and wholesome days spent leaf peeping and enjoying the brilliant tapestry of autumn hues across the UK.

Max Shmidt, Chief Adventurer of CamperDays, says, “Autumn is a fantastic time to embark on a cosy camping trip where you can enjoy visiting quaint villages and towns, ancient woodland and historic country pubs against the backdrop of the spectacular colours of autumn. It’s also a more cost-effective time to enjoy a road trip, as vehicle hire is typically 20% less in the autumn months.

“Whilst the combination of shorter, darker days and plummeting temperatures – even on the sunniest days may make the idea of camping less pleasurable, a campervan trip is a great alternative. One that allows you to experience all the natural wonders of the great outdoors without foregoing a warm shower, hot chocolate on tap or a comfortable bed.”

Below, Max recommends five of the cosiest UK road trips for the whole family this October half term.

  1. Scottish Highlands
Begin your journey in Inverness and drive through Loch Ness, ending your journey in Fort William allowing you to enjoy the autumnal hues of the highlands, the mystical Loch Ness and the rugged landscapes of Glen Coe.Autumn in the Highlands means rutting season for red deer, giving you a chance to catch the large males locking antlers – perfect for nature lovers. Whilst the longer nights and lack of light pollution allow for some fantastic stargazing opportunities.
  2. Northumberland Coast
Begin your journey in Alnwick and drive through Craster and Bamburgh, ending your journey at Holy Island (tide permitting). En route enjoy stunning coastal views with the golden autumn light illuminating the North Sea as well as the historic Bamburgh Castle perched along the coast.Northumberland is another fantastic spot for stargazing, with 572 square miles of the county awarded Gold Tier status for their dark skies. The UK’s largest International Dark Sky Park is also located in Northumberland, so wrap up in coats and blankets, and set up camp with your thermos for a chance of spotting a shooting star or two.
  3. The Peak District
Home to stunning mountainous terrain, begin your route in Bakewell, heading through Castleton and Buxton and enjoying the dramatic moorland landscapes and charming spa towns along your way, finishing your route in Matlock Bath.Home of the Bakewell pudding, make sure to stop at a local pub or bakery to enjoy this speciality.
  4. The Lake District
Sprawling lakes make the Lake District a fantastic place to visit in the autumn as the reflections of the fiery autumn forests make the views even more awe-inspiring. Start your road trip in Windermere and drive through Ambleside and Grasmere, ending your journey in Keswick. The Matlock Bath Illuminations festival also runs every weekend through September and October, with a spectacular fireworks display on the final night. During this seven-week festival, Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders’ Association decorate themed boats with an array of coloured lights for visitors to enjoy.
  5. The Cotswolds
The quaint villages of the Cotswolds, lined with thatched cottages and autumn trees, make for the cosiest of road trips this autumn. Home to the Broadway Food Festival, head to the picturesque town in early October to enjoy a celebration of the area’s rich culinary heritage, featuring local cheeses, artisan breads, craft beers and a multitude of local produce.Begin your route in Chipping Campden and head to Stow-on-the-Wold, then on to Bulbury, Burford, ending your journey in the historic town of Bath.
