6 zen activities to enjoy in the Swiss resort of LAAX, for a relaxing getaway.

While international travel is on the horizon, not all travellers are keen to return to the teeming cities, bustling beaches and packed pools they used to frequent. LAAX, one of Switzerland’s most picturesque regions, offers the ideal escape for those looking to embrace its tranquil, laid-back and ‘patgific’ way of life, which guarantees relaxation.

Below, LAAX has listed six zen activities to experience in the region, to help the mind unwind, the body relax, and to escape the everyday stresses.

Watch meteor showers at Switzerland’s largest public observatory

There is a long tradition of stargazing in Falera, in the region of Laax. A combination of clear mountain air and high altitude make it the ideal location from which to explore the stars. Mirasteilas Observatory is Switzerland’s largest publicly accessible observatory, nestled in the mountains where visitors can gain first-hand insight into the world of astronomy with regular guided tours. Stargazers should visit between 12 – 13 August to watch the peak of the Perseid meteor shower for free at the observatory, which is predicted to produce around 60 shooting stars an hour in 2021.

Hike the award winning Trutg dil Flem water trail

Along bubbling pools of sapphire water and down into the forests of the valley floor, the Trutg dil Flem water trail follows the Flem stream along a gentle path, ideal for all the family to enjoy. Visitors are encouraged to take a swimming costume for a refreshing plunge into the stream’s pools, and take a minute to listen to the rush of water and the call of local birds, while breathing in the fresh mountain air to completely unwind.

Sunset picnic at the Swiss Grand Canyon

Just a 45-minute gentle hike from the town of Flims lies Il Spir viewing platform, giving a unique, 180-degree view of the Rhine Gorge, also known as the ‘Swiss Grand Canyon’. Il Spir, meaning ‘swift’ in the local Romansh language, is an architectural feat in itself, shaped like a swift spreading its wings to take flight over the gorge. This phenomena is one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Graubünden region, the home of the patgific way of life, and is unique in the Alps. Best viewed from above at sunset, watch this little known European landmark as the sun lights up the gorge’s craggy outcrops and white water rapids, while enjoying a locally sourced picnic.

Relax on LAAX’s first yoga trail

Guests can calm their minds, slow their heart rates, and reconnect with the great outdoors after a long winter of lockdowns on the region’s first yoga hike through the forest of Trin. The route encourages yogis to appreciate the shapes, colours and strength of the forest, as an exercise to awaken their own inner peace. At each of the nine stops, visitors are guided by signs through an exercise designed to mirror the natural landscape; an immersive way to discover the details of the region during a stay in LAAX.

Treat your tastebuds on two culinary hikes

For those who enjoy their meals away from crowded bars and restaurants, LAAX’s Woods & Water and Mountain & Views culinary trails are the perfect substitute. With a tailored menu using locally and sustainably sourced food, the routes combine relaxing strolls with the region’s delicacies in outdoor venues, to enjoy the best the landscape has to offer. Each hike is suited to different abilities, so those after some light exercise can choose between a three and a half hour hike interspersed with a three course meal, while more adventurous hikers can opt for a six and a half hour hike and a delicious five course meal.

Experience the annual Descent of the Cows Festival

Alpabzug, or the Descent of the Cows, is an annual festival held in September to celebrate the day the local cows are brought down from their summer on the mountainside back to the valleys. This centuries old event starts when the cows are decorated with floral garlands high in the hills, before they’re walked down the mountain paths and guided back home to the valley floor for autumn. Visitors can hear the sound of the cow bells as the herd approaches and join in the celebrations over a drink with the local farmers while enjoying traditional alpine games.
