dealchecker, the trusted online travel price comparison website, has revealed the top five European destinations that Brits will be whisking their loved ones away to this Valentine’s Day weekend, and one may come as a surprise.

Experts at dealchecker have analysed searches for flights in the run-up to Valentine’s weekend (12 – 14 February) compared to alternatives weekends in February, revealing staycations are a popular choice for a romantic break this Valentine’s.

Stereotypical destinations, such as Paris and Venice, have this year been pipped to the post by Belfast and Newquay, as Brits look closer to home for an unconventional Valentine’s Day minibreak. With both locations boasting stunning coastal scenery, bracing countryside walks and cosy cottages to cuddle-up with a loved one, there’s plenty of activities to enjoy with a special someone here in the UK.

dealchecker’s Travel Expert, Rosie Panter, explained: “The dealchecker team were surprised by the search data, which revealed that Newquay beat the likes of Paris and Rome as a destination of choice for a romantic weekend away. However, after an office debate at dealchecker HQ, there was an overwhelming agreement that eating fish and chips at sunset, overlooking the sea was much more romantic than a croissant in a cobbled square.”

Most popular romantic destinations 2020, as ranked by dealchecker:
1) Tenerife
2) Belfast
3) Newquay
4) Alicante
5) Krakow

Rosie added: “Belfast is also a welcome addition to the Valentine’s hot list; offering the chance to explore the countryside and visit popular Game of Thrones scenes, before warming by a log fire in a country pub.”

Working with the travel brands you know and the brands you don’t, the dealchecker team is dedicated to handpicking the best offers around and provide honest and helpful advice and tips.
