Fans get a chance to challenge Olympic track star.

Premium mattress brand Tempur, today announces its sponsorship of British track cyclist and Olympic medallist, Callum Skinner – a perfect partnership as Callum takes time to focus on rest and recuperation.

26-year-old Skinner, who won a team gold and individual silver track cycling medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, said: “After a packed couple of years, now’s the time to take some time to fully recharge my batteries, so I’m delighted to have the backing from the team at Tempur.”

Skinner added; “I was first involved with Tempur back when I’d just joined the cycling academy and was suffering from a recurring back injury. It was affecting my ability to sleep and train, so one of the team asked about the quality of my mattress as a possible cause of the problem.

“I got in touch with Tempur, pleaded my case, and was lucky enough that they were able to help out with a mattress. The difference in the quality of sleep I got from it was so great I never looked back.”

Tempur UK Managing Director Tobin James, added: “We’ve always been proud of the benefits Callum’s enjoyed from our products and as rest is what we do best, we’re delighted to be announcing a formal sponsorship deal with him.”

Skinner added: “I couldn’t turn down the challenge to meet and race with fans before I head off to New Zealand. As the Six Day cycling will be on next door at the VeloPark, we’re expecting to see some pretty impressive times being set.”

Callum will be meeting fans and signing autographs at the Tempur store in Westfield Stratford City on Saturday the 27th October from 12:00 to 18:30.

About Callum Skinner
Born in Glasgow, Callum was inspired to take up track cycling in 2004, when fellow Scotsman Sir Chris Hoy won gold in the kilo at the Olympic Games in Athens. Four years later, after moving to Edinburgh and having access to a local track (Meadowbank), Callum smashed the national 200m record for his age category for which Sir Chris presented him with the inaugural Chris Hoy Trophy in recognition for this achievement.

Callum joined British Cycling’s Academy Programme in 2010, having progressed through the Talent Team and Olympic Development Programme.

He was selected to represent Scotland at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where he came fourth in the team sprint. In 2011, Callum represented Great Britain at the under-23 European track cycling championships in Portugal where he brought home two medals – a silver in the team sprint and a bronze in the sprint.

In April 2013, Callum progressed onto the Podium programme and he won his first world cup medal at the third round of the 2013/14 series when he, along with Lewis Oliva and John Paul took the bronze medal in the team sprint.

Fresh from winning four titles at the National Track Championships in September, Callum was crowned the European champion in the kilo event in 2014. A couple of weeks later, Callum won his first gold medal at world cup level, winning the team sprint event with current Olympic champions Jason Kenny and Phil Hindes in Mexico.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics he was part of the team that won gold in the men’s team sprint along with Philip Hindes and Jason Kenny, setting an Olympic record of 42.440 in the final against New Zealand. He won the silver medal in the men’s individual sprint, beating Matthew Glaetzer 2–0 in the semi-final.
