School Children Help Flight Centre Raise Thousands for Charity

School Children Help Flight Centre Raise Thousands for Charity
12 April 2017 James Brooke

The Flight Centre Schools Triathlon hopes to become the schools’ equivalent of the London Marathon.

Flight Centre is pleased to announce the Flight Centre Schools Triathlon is returning for its second year in 2017; with double the number of schools taking part this year.

Taking place between 23rd April and 21st May 2017, the Flight Centre Schools Triathlon is a series of four events encouraging children aged 7-13 to participate in triathlons in a safe and non-competitive environment while raising money for charity. The children compete in teams of four at running, swimming and cycling. To ensure the events are inclusive for everyone, only the team’s overall time (rather than individual times for each child) will be recorded.

The Flight Centre Schools Triathlon is backed by Restless Development, an international development charity that puts young people at the very heart of dealing with the issues that affect them, their communities, and their countries. The events will raise funds for Restless Development and the chosen charities of the host and participating schools.

In 2016, two schools – Royal Russell School in Croydon and Bradfield College in Berkshire – took part in the first ever Flight Centre Schools Triathlon, raising an amazing £110,000. With four schools taking part in 2017, and each participant committing to raise a minimum of £50, the annual event hopes to raise even more this year. The charity plans to add many more Triathlons over the next few years and aims to raise £1 million by its fifth year.

The Flight Centre Schools Triathlon 2017 will take place at the following schools:

  • Royal Russell School, Croydon (23 April)
  • Bradfield College, Berkshire (7 May)
  • Cranleigh School, Surrey (14 May)
  • Marlborough College, Wiltshire (21 May)

Royal Russell School’s Headteacher Chris Hutchinson, who took part in last year’s inaugural Flight Centre Schools Triathlon, said: “It’s been brilliant to be involved with these events and we’re really excited to take part again in 2017. Last year, we saw children learning to ride a bike and improving their swimming just so they could take part. I was thrilled with how engaged the children were with the idea of raising money to help other children around the world. They were rightly proud of taking part.”

Jim Sewell, Trustee of Restless, said: “The children have really understood that they can make a difference and the combination of sport and charity in a children’s event has been incredibly powerful. I’m so excited about the potential for this event – we see it becoming the schools’ equivalent of the London Marathon.”

Chris Galanty, Managing Director of Flight Centre Europe and South Africa, said: “It’s a privilege to be the lead sponsor of an event that encourages young people to both get active and think about the needs of others. Flight Centre and Restless Development are a natural fit; Restless Development is all about young people trying to change the world and our purpose is to open up the world for those who want to see it.””

Offering all aspects of travel from the widest choice of airfares to tailor-made holidays, Flight Centre is one of the world’s largest travel retailers. It has over 80 stores throughout the UK, with new stores opening regularly, and is approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

In addition to the fun on the day, Flight Centre is offering some great prizes for both parents and kids: parents will be in with the chance to win a £1,000 Flight Centre travel voucher just by registering their child for the Triathlon or signing up at an event.

Kids can enter the ‘Best Team Photo’ competition for a chance to win a family pass to Harry Potter World for all four members. To enter, parents should post a team photo using the hashtag #TriFlightCentre – it could be anything from an action shot, training shot, them dressed up or the team taking part in the event.

A judging panel will choose the winner by 30 May 2017 from all entries, which will be hosted on the Flight Centre Schools Triathlon landing page: http://www.flightcentre.co.uk/welcome/schools-triathlon

The charities supported through the triathlon events in 2016 were: Young Epilepsy; The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity; Teapot Trust; Team Margot; Joshua Orphan & Community Care; The Children’s Trust; The Matt Kendall Foundation.

Leading race organisers Human Race, the experts in mass sport participation events, will be responsible for the events management of the triathlons.
