With the cost of a pint now averaging a hefty £6.09, there’s never been a better time to reconsider your next holiday destination and opt for a spot where you can enjoy a few frosty ones without leaving a hole in your pocket.
Rosie Panter, a travel expert at the UK’s trusted travel price comparison site, dealchecker, says: “Whilst the UK doesn’t have the highest average price for a pint in Europe – that unwanted honour goes to Iceland at £8.33 a pop – if you’re anything like me, you too will have felt personally victimised by the rising cost.
“For many the idea of a cheeky half or three is now limited to special occasions and vacations. As such it’s well worth considering holiday destinations where the cost is less prohibitive.
“Just don’t forget to also search out great deals on flights and accommodation so that you have even more spending money to enjoy in destination.”

Debrecen, Hungary – 89p
Ranked in many best destination round-ups, Hungary continues to wow tourists with its interesting culture, beauty and exceptionally low beer prices. This makes for a great choice, but, if you truly want to get bang for your buck, head to Debrecen, where a pint can cost as little as 89p – cheaper than a bottle of water. Expect elegant shops, a cultural centre filled with archaeological artifacts, and of course, stretches of bars and pubs where can you take advantage of great value drinks.
Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife – £1.60
An oldie but a goodie, this Canary Island classic continues to provide bang for your buck. And with sweeping sea views, a serene atmosphere and dirt cheap pints, there are no surprises why.
We recommend traveling in June before the school summer holidays, which will allow you to experience good weather, and enjoy great value for money in-destination, all while avoiding peak season airfares and hotel charges.
Faro, Portugal – £2.18 a pint
The Algarve is synonymous with azure waters, sunshine, delicious food and affordable drinking boltholes. Consider Faro for your next European break for wallet friendly price tags on flights, hotel stays, and in-destination costs – beers start at a mere £2.
Zagreb, Croatia – £2.44 a pint
Zagreb brings to mind sandy beaches by day and partying with friends by night thanks to an attractively low price per pint, just £2.44. You could even ‘Split’ your time here between cities, as Croatia as a whole provides affordable options for flights and hotels. Avoid the school holidays and visit in May-June to take advantage of the best savings.
Reykjavik, Iceland – £8.33 a pint
Topping the list with the most expensive pint in Europe is Reykjavik. While Iceland is known for its beautiful landscapes, rich cultural offerings and ease of travel from the UK, the cost of beer isn’t so easy on the wallet. That doesn’t mean you should avoid it totally though. We’d recommend visiting in ‘Dry January’ to make the most of the thriving nightlife but save on the cost of drinks.
