Jo’s Legacy Lives On… GoFundMe Campaign in Memory of Jo Cox Nears £2million Mark

Jo’s Legacy Lives On… GoFundMe Campaign in Memory of Jo Cox Nears £2million Mark
25 November 2016 James Brooke

The GoFundMe campaign set up in celebration and memory of MP Jo Cox, who was tragically stabbed in June this year, is now nearly at the two million mark, making it the biggest ever GoFundMe crowd-funding campaign in the UK and the third largest in GoFundMe history (including the US).

Thomas Mair has now been jailed for life after being found guilty of the murder of the Labour MP. The 53-year-old shot and stabbed to death the mother-of-two in Birstall, West Yorkshire, on 16 June, a week before the EU referendum vote.

The GoFundMe page was set up by Jo’s friends and family in close collaboration with her husband Brendan Fox, to raise funds to support charities closest to Jo’s heart.

  • The Royal Voluntary Service, to support volunteers helping combat loneliness in Jo’s constituency, Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire
  • HOPE not hate, who seek to challenge and defeat the politics of hate and extremism within local communities across Britain
  • The White Helmets, who volunteer search and rescue workers in Syria. Unarmed and neutral, these heroes have saved more than 51,000 lives from under the rubble and bring hope to the region

Jo’s friends and family, who set up the campaign up said on her page: “We are deeply humbled by the incredible wave of support this page has received. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, shared and mentioned this fund to friends, it is truly astounding to feel this level of solidarity and love for Jo and the values she stood for.”

Kelsea Little, spokesperson for GoFundMe.com, said: “The campaign for Jo Cox is officially the largest and fastest growing GoFundMe campaign ever in the UK. It has been truly amazing to see such a large number of people come together to raise money for the charities closest to Jo’s heart – such a touching outpouring of love and support in her memory. Jo Cox leaves behind a remarkable legacy.”

The GoFundMe page Jo Cox’s Fund became the fastest growing GoFundMe campaign in the UK and the largest ever in just two days exceeding the UK’s previous largest GoFundMe campaigns Donate4Mike, which raised a total of £ 454,064.

The Jo Cox Fund raised over £62k in just four hours and had exceeded over £463k in one day but the team are pleased to announce that the campaign has now reached over 1.9million and could hit the two million mark if donations continue to flow in.

This follows the GoFundMe campaign for the Orlando Pulse shooting victims which raised $7.8million, becoming the largest and fastest growing crowdfunding appeal ever.

To date, GoFundMe fundraisers have raised over £2.5billion for a whole host of different causes from medical expenses, education costs, volunteer programmes and youth sports to memorials and even pets.
