Men More Likely to Make Whiplash Claim than Women

Nearly a third of women are too worried about insurance premiums rising to claim.

New online YouGov research commissioned by Claims.co.uk has indicated that women would be less likely to claim for whiplash than men. It revealed that 40 per cent of men wouldn’t find anything a barrier to claiming financial compensation for a whiplash in jury, compared to 28 per cent women.

The biggest barrier to claiming for whiplash for women was ‘fear of my/the driver’s insurance premium rising’, with 30 per cent citing this as an obstacle to claiming, compared to 23 per cent of men. Joint first alongside the threat of rising insurance premiums for the men (23 per cent) was ‘fear of being branded as someone who has jumped on the ‘claims bandwagon’’, with a similar number of women seeing this as a reason not to claim, with 24 per cent of them citing this as a barrier.

“There needs to be more clarity when it comes to claiming for whiplash,” says managing director of Claims.co.uk, John Quail. “Whilst women are more concerned about their insurance premiums going up and fear of the ‘claims bandwagon’, we saw across the board these two being cited as the top reasons not to claim. Whiplash is recognised as a medical condition, and the negative stigma of the claims bandwagon needs to be dispelled in order to ensure everyone entitled to receive compensation feels able to do so.”

Britain has recently been referred to as the “whiplash capital of Europe”, which has certainly created a negative reputation for people who claim whiplash, with some being referred to as fraudulent. Yet, whiplash at its worst can be debilitating for up to 6 months and can inhibit neck movement, causing for real problems relating to both office place work and manual work, which can obviously restrict people’s ability to work and make a living.

“Ultimately, whiplash is an injury that requires compensation. Although fraudulent claims have muddied the landscape of claims compensation, they should not deter those who are victims of the injury at the hands of someone else’s negligence or accident,” concludes John.
