Style expert highlights the standout interior trends from Pinterest Predicts 2025 report – and explains how to incorporate them into your own home.
The annual Pinterest Predicts 2025 report is out, announcing which trends are set to be in next year based on the search patterns of the social media platform’s 537 million monthly active users(1).
In the below guide, style expert at Contura, Catharina Björkman, explains which of the interior trends are the ones to watch in 2025 and how to incorporate them into your home.
Catharina says: “For anyone lacking interior inspiration, Pinterest is the perfect place to look – especially for those seeking to give their homes a glow up at the start of the New Year.
“From “Terra Futura” to “Primary Play”, this year’s trend predictions offer a wonderful mix of colourful, creative and sustainable trends to help spark the imagination of your inner interior designer. The common element to all these trends is that they allow an expression of the inner self and aren’t constrained by traditional design ideals.”

Solarpunk is an optimistic movement which envisages and collectively works towards a sustainable future(2). Searches for ‘solarpunk house’ have increased by 80%, inspiring Pinterest’s prediction of the “Terra Futura” trend for 2025.
There’s no doubt that we should all be thinking more sustainably when it comes to decorating our interiors – for the benefit of ourselves, our homes and the planet. However, it can feel difficult to know where to start.
Begin by opting for 100% natural materials when furnishing your home – think jute rugs, seagrass storage boxes, linen curtains, cotton lampshades and cashmere throws. The durable nature of hardwoods, such as chestnut and oak, make them an ideal option for frequently used items of furniture such as bedframes, kitchen chairs and wardrobes.
Embracing biophilic design – a concept which seeks to enshrine nature in architecture and to ensure that humans are able to maintain a connection to it – is a great way to ensure that your home interiors not only look fabulous, but that they help you feel it too.
An accessible way to do this is to fill your home with houseplants. Houseplants add a vibrant pop of colour to any room and have also been linked to numerous health benefits such as reducing stress and improving air quality(3).
Primary Play
Trending search terms such as “hand-painted wall pattern”, “door murals” and “contrast trim” have formed the basis for Pinterest’s prediction of the “Primary Play” trend for 2025. So, don’t be afraid to get playful with your interiors! After all, your home should be a place that brings you joy.
It’s not just about the result though but enjoying the process of creating something new. Upcycling has been an interiors trend for a while as it offers a great way to put your own stamp on the furniture in your home. Take inspiration from primary play and paint a chest of drawers in bright, bold colours. Just remember to sand it down before painting and varnish after to ensure your efforts last.
For bites of ‘play’ throughout the home use big colours and patterns in smaller spaces. Choose a wallpaper with colourful birds to line your kitchen cupboards for a pop of joy when you reach for dishware, add colourful LED lights to your bathroom mirror, or cover a small room’s ceiling, like a pantry or utility room, in a geometric design using paint and electrical tape for sharp lines.
Mix & Maximalist
In keeping with the theme of embracing fun in 2025, searches for “eclectic maximalism” and “vintage maximalism” have risen by 215% and 260% respectively and have heralded the arrival of (what Pinterest has named) the “Mix & Maximalist” trend.
Whilst the trend is about using whatever colour, patterns and fabrics you like, it isn’t achieved through randomly throwing things together and hoping for the best. The different elements should be linked by a theme such as metallic tones, gem colours or muted fabrics.
Create a wow moment in the entryway of the home, no matter it’s size, by adding a mirror with a gilded gold frame, a metallic vase with bright flowers, either fresh or faux, and a geometric tile on the floor – which, in smaller spaces, can be achieved with a rug.
In fact, the trend works just as well in small spaces. Create drama in a bathroom by painting it a very deep navy or burgundy and mix in luxe elements such as gold handles, taps and light sconces. Then add interest by creating wall panelling using MDF strips and fill in the space with a wallpaper, ideally a bright floral or nature inspired pattern on a dark background to match the room’s paint colour. By adding this much activity in a small space it allows you to bring in the dramatic elements in a controlled way so it doesn’t get away from you.
Dolled Up
Inspired by recent pop culture moments, the dollhouse is having a revival. Tapping into a sense of fun and playfulness, the emphasis is on upbeat colours in soft, pastel tones. These colours can be incorporated throughout the home with throw pillows and blankets or more contained to a specific area i.e. a table scape of tinted glass candlestick holders, table runners and even colourful cutlery sets.
Unusual or overtly stylised items are perfect for this design trend. A side table that looks like a flower, a lampshade trimmed with pink feathers or vases that look like handbags are all quirky items that find harmony and place in this design scheme, allowing you to really tap into the sense of fun the trend represents.
Small touches can be added to wall murals; stencils of different flowers can be used to create a multi-coloured feature wall in baby blues, pastel pinks and lavenders. Or add a line of love hearts below the picture rail in bright pink for a nod to everyone’s favourite female doll.
Cherry Coded
Aesthetic trends have long been based on food-spiration, from ‘cinnamon girl’ to ‘blueberry milk’ design. The food focused trend that look’s set to take over interiors in 2025 is cherry-red, with searches for ‘cherry vibe’ already up 325%.
Use layering and texture to break up a monochromatic look, for example, a deep red velvet sofa can be partnered with a berry-stained cotton throw and cherry-red shiny silk lampshades. This will stop the colour overwhelming a space, rather than enhancing it.
To incorporate a low-key nod to the trend in your home, use the bright burgundy colour on soft furnishings throughout the home, including scarves that can be placed over lamps so the whole room is bathed in a gentle cherry glow.
As with any trend, take what works for you and your lifestyle and have fun with it. 2025 is the year of unashamed self-expression through design and interiors, and that never goes out of style…
