  • Cultural and culinary tourism is often a gateway for Asian travellers to explore new destinations

London, 18 September 2025 – The 190th edition of Oktoberfest is taking place in Munich until Sunday 5 October, and this year more Asian tourists than ever are choosing to travel all over Germany to witness the spectacle.

Trip.com Group, a leading global travel service provider, has crunched the numbers and found a huge increase in flight bookings from Asia to the Bavarian capital.

Andy Washington, General Manager for Europe at Trip.com says: “Oktoberfest is synonymous with beer tents, delicious food, lively music, Bavarian culture and traditional costumes. The rise in flight bookings observed by Trip.com Group for the festival period emphasises trends we have already witnessed this year showing a growing interest in culinary tourism in Europe among Asian travellers, who are also exploring further afield from traditional city hotspots to get their fix.”

China leads the way and South Korea sees biggest spike in bookings

China is the top country of origin of visitors (in passenger numbers) travelling to Munich between 20 Sept and 5 Oct, with flight bookings having increased 24% YoY.

Flight bookings to Munich have also increased among travellers from Hong Kong (169%), Taiwan (182%) and Singapore (120%). However, the biggest spike comes from South Korea, with a 592% increase from last year!

Cultural and culinary tourism is often a gateway to exploring new destinations. Oktoberfest may be the main reason to visit Munich at this time of the year, but the city and its surrounding areas have much more to offer. Asian travellers are aware of this and often choose to enhance their trip by adding on other experiences.

Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most popular castles in Europe situated in the foothills of the Alps, and Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, are some of the places that are seeing a growth in searches compared to last year.

And, of course, Asian travellers are keen to venture further afield to explore other German cities during Oktoberfest, with Frankfurt, Berlin and Dusseldorf being some of the most popular.
