Couples and groups of friends seeking a culinary discovery in France this autumn should look no further than the Opal Coast, just 90 minutes by ferry from Dover.
As the vibrant hues of autumn transform the landscapes, there’s no better time for couples to embark on a romantic getaway and groups to connect ahead of the silly season. France’s Opal Coast – a gem that boasts unspoiled beaches, charming villages, and exceptional culinary delights – offers the perfect blend of nature, history, and gourmet experiences that can be experienced during a short break.
The Opal Coast offers something uniquely special in autumn. Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and a display of seasonal foliage make this northern region of France ideal for those seeking an authentic experience.
Renowned for its local produce, nature parks, and coastal beauty, Côte d’Opale is a treasure trove for foodies. From fresh seafood to artisanal cheeses, couples and groups can embark on a gourmet journey across the region, exploring some of France’s most exquisite culinary traditions.
The best way to experience all there is to offer in the region is to take the car, enabling both flexibility and comfort. Irish Ferries encourages guests to take the seasygoing option when travelling to Northern France with the car this autumn, with sailings from Dover to Calais taking around 90 minutes and prices from just £98 for a three-day short break or £128 for a five-day short break.
Together with renowned chef Trish Deseine, Irish Ferries has created a sample itinerary for an unforgettable quick trip featuring both foodie experiences and exploration.
Day 1: Calais to Boulogne-sur-Mer – Coastal Romance and Gourmet Delights
Upon arriving in Calais, start your journey with a scenic coastal drive south to Boulogne-sur-Mer. Take a peaceful walk along Wissant Beach, where the dramatic cliffs and expansive sands provide the perfect backdrop for a romantic afternoon. For an al fresco experience, stop by the bustling fishing port of Boulogne-sur-Mer and visit Quai 42, an oyster and wine bar. Here, owner Philippe Molitor can help you select a bottle of natural or organic wine, which pairs well with fresh seafood from the local fish market.
Before heading off, don’t miss the opportunity to pick up a cheese board from renowned cheesemonger Philippe Olivier. With an array of local cheeses like Sablé de Wissant, Fleur de Fruges, and Écume de Wimereux, you’ll have all the ingredients for a delicious picnic later on your journey.
Day 2: Montreuil-sur-Mer – A Gastronomic Gem
Next, venture inland to the medieval town of Montreuil-sur-Mer, a haven for lovers of fine food and wine. Encircled by stone walls, this charming town is famed for its cobbled streets, vibrant markets, and high-end restaurants. The star attraction here is La Grenouillère, a Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by the innovative chef Alexandre Gauthier. Gauthier’s modern take on French cuisine has earned him two Michelin stars, and his restaurant offers a dining experience that is both creative and unforgettable.
If you’d rather sample a more casual fare, visit Froggy’s Tavern, a rustic grill-house that celebrates local flavours, or enjoy a gourmet meal at L’Anecdote, a beautifully designed brasserie.
Day 3: Le Touquet – Charm by the Sea
Just 25 minutes west of Montreuil-sur-Mer lies Le Touquet, a seaside resort town known for its opulent charm. Take a stroll along the promenade, breathing in the sea air, or indulge in some people-watching at one of the town’s many café terraces. This elegant town, known as “Paris Plage,” is also home to Chocolaterie Trogneux, where you can sample exquisite chocolates created by Brigitte Macron’s family.
For a more indulgent experience, dine at La Brasserie Les Sports, reportedly a favourite of President Emmanuel Macron, and finish your evening with a cocktail at the luxurious Westminster Hotel. Its cosy ambience is perfect for couples seeking a romantic end to their day, or groups wanting to catch up over crafted drinks.
Day 4: The Baie de Somme – Nature’s Playground
For those with a love for nature and outdoor adventure, a trip to the Baie de Somme Nature Reserve is a must. Located just 50 minutes from Le Touquet, this stunning coastal area is renowned for its dunes, salt marshes, and diverse birdlife. Whether you prefer a peaceful walk along the beach or a bike ride through the surrounding trails, the Baie de Somme offers a beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle.
After a day of exploration, enjoy lunch at Les Tourelles in Le Crotoy, a charming brasserie with panoramic views of the bay. Alternatively, head to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, a medieval village perched on the cliffs overlooking the coast. Here, you can sample local delicacies like salt marsh lamb, samphire, and Gâteau Battu—a buttery brioche unique to the region.
Whether it’s a romantic autumn break or a gourmet adventure with friends, the Opal Coast promises a unique holiday experience. Irish Ferries offers the freedom to bring your car, giving you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. Special three-day short break fares start from £98 and five-day short break fares start from £128. Sailings depart up to 16 times per day onboard Isle of Inishmore and Oscar Wilde.
