New London Members’ Club Breaks the Mould on Socialising in the City

New London Members’ Club Breaks the Mould on Socialising in the City
18 October 2018 James Brooke

Three brothers are on a mission to change London’s social scene, launching The Oblique Life; a new members’ club that puts community first and that is redefining what luxury means for today’s Londoners. The Oblique Life is tailored towards like-minded people from all walks of life who are welcoming, social and passionate about new experiences.

The Oblique Life brings members together by hosting a wide variety of events and experiences for all interests across fashion, food and drink, health, music, culture, travel and technology. All events provide a personalised experience and a unique community aspect, whether it’s integrating ice breaker tasks at a wine tasting, a post-yoga mix and mingle brunch, or life drawing with unlimited wine.

The club helps members make the most of living in London by offering a personal concierge service, Make It Happen, taking the stress out of daily life by handling the all-important life admin. The concierge service can take care of anything from restaurant bookings to recommendations of activities and places to eat & drink in London, travel suggestions, and help with curating events.

Members also receive access to special offers and benefits from over 75 partner brands, including queue jumping at top bars and restaurants across the city. The Oblique Life helps members discover all that London has to offer thanks to its exclusive discounts at venues such as Absurd Bird, Burlock, The Lucky Pig, and Opium Cocktail & Dim Sum Parlour.

The unique membership, combined with the on-demand lifestyle management service, is revolutionising how Londoners meet people by creating a membership that pioneers a social slant on experiences and community-driven events in the digital age.

The family-run start-up was founded by the Sumaria brothers; Romi, Shonil and Keyu, with the ambition to help Londoners to get out and about, meet new people, and socialise in the same way they did before the days of dating apps and social media.

Romi Sumaria, CEO and Co-founder, said: “In a world that is increasingly uncertain, divided and polarised, our mission is to help people in London and beyond create a true sense of home away from home. We feel this is achieved through the social events and experiences themselves, as opposed to the archaic, often fairly pretentious members’ venues that currently reside in London.

“We go out of our way to create welcoming environments where people feel comfortable to be themselves and to mingle with others while doing the things they enjoy.”

Steph Mutsaers, aged 30, works as a Media Relations Manager at the Wine & Spirit Trust and is a member of The Oblique Life. Steph commented on her experience: “The Oblique Life is the ultimate lifestyle membership for Londoners. The range of partners and benefits cover every aspect of life and every experience brings a great mix of old and new faces, so your network is constantly expanding both with like-minded people and those who open your eyes to the eclectic international crowd that only London boasts.”

Romi, Shonil and Keyu were inspired to set up The Oblique Life after becoming tired of London’s impersonal social scene. Coming from a large family with roots spanning across three different continents, the brothers have always been part of a strong and supportive community and wanted others to have the same experience.

Romi said: “London can sometimes be a lonely and unfriendly city, so we wanted to get people speaking to each other again. The Oblique Life helps members from all walks of life to really connect and engage with each other and allows people to network outside of their immediate circles.”

The Oblique Life Membership starts from £20 per month for The Community Plan, including regular member gifts and rewards and a reactive concierge service. For £50 per month members can upgrade to the Tailored Plan, where they will also receive a dedicated social and professional networking service, access to The Oblique Life’s global contacts, priority access to high profile venues and events and a tailored concierge service.
