Marley Coffee Reveals the Top Coffee Trends for 2021

Marley Coffee Reveals the Top Coffee Trends for 2021
27 January 2021 James Brooke

Chai spiced hazelnut latte do? Or chai spiced hazelnut latte don’t? It’s the latter according to Marley Coffee; global gourmet organic coffee brand from the family of Bob Marley.

Many of us are now having to prepare our daily coffee in the confines of our own home rather than relying on the skill and tools of the baristas at the local café, which means the way we consume coffee is inevitably changing.

With home working set to continue well into 2021 and an ever-growing interest in quality, flavour and the coffee preparation process, experts at Marley Coffee share their guide to what’s hot and what’s not in the world of coffee.

UK brand manager for Marley Coffee, Guy Wilmot, says: “Over the past year our morning cup of coffee has gone from something we grab on the busy commute to work, to a morning ritual – a moment of calm and contemplation before we get on with our day. This has undoubtedly impacted the type of coffee we are choosing to enjoy at home.

“Coffee drinkers have become more interested in the art of making coffee – different blends, flavours, strengths, countries of origin, quality… and far from seeing it as a chore, are savouring the at-home brewing process. Budding coffee connoisseurs are going a step further, educating themselves on the full coffee journey right through from production to consumption and looking at the sustainability and ethical practices along the way.”

Read on for Guy’s six key coffee trend predictions for 2021 …

A voyage of discovery

Coffee lovers are interested in variety and learning about the different coffee types and their unique flavour profiles. Whilst they may have one trusty brand in their cupboard, they like to mix things up.

In 2020 we all witnessed an increased interest in Turkish and Dalgona coffee thanks to social media, and whilst their popularity in the UK may have just been fleeting, there are sure to be 2021 equivalents.

We predict that bolder, darker roasts will prove popular in the year ahead, as coffee palates become more discerning and the quality of the roasting process continues to improve.

Emphasis on quality

Far gone are the days of simply grabbing a tin of instant coffee off the supermarket shelves. The challenges of 2020 saw Brits switch from enjoying real coffee out and about, to enjoying the luxury in the comfort of their own home.

We predict that people will spend a bit more time and money on finding their coffee of choice in 2021, and they’ll be willing to spend a little extra for premium quality products that truly deliver on taste.

Do you brew?

It’s only natural that, when making coffee at home, coffee drinkers have become more interested in the brewing process. This has led to a huge increase in bean-to-cup, Chemex, pourover, AeroPress and even the classic French press brewing techniques.

With many now deprived of their daily commute, people are able to carve out extra time in the morning to put care into their cup, which has helped transform the act of having a coffee from commuting compulsion to personal pleasure.

A return to classic and authentic coffee

Insipid, milky, frothy and syrupy coffees are out; authentic and unpretentious are in. Consumers are returning to the delights of more classically roasted coffees, enjoying darker, more full-bodied brews than the Scandi-style light roasts that have been popular in the past few years.

A milky latte or cappuccino used to be the nation’s top choice, but more and more, coffee lovers are reverting to the simple black coffee, which we believe is the best way to truly enjoy a quality blend.

An eco-conscious caffeine hit

With every passing year, we all become more aware of our environmental impact and this is no different when it comes to our coffee habits.

Coffee drinkers want to indulge knowing they are enjoying a quality, sustainable product – they want to understand where the beans are from, how they were grown and how the product was produced.

This will be an ever-important driver for coffee purchases through 2021.

The buzz around decaf

There’s no need to cut out coffee if you’re trying to limit your caffeine intake. Whilst historically the decaffeination process could impact the flavour of coffee, decaf technology has grown leaps and bounds, so this is no longer the case.

The Swiss Water Decaffeination process used by Marley Coffee, for example, relies on caffeine solubility and osmosis to remove the caffeine from coffee beans. The result? A coffee that is caffeine-free but retains its rich flavour profile and is free from additional chemical solvents.

Combined with added awareness around the impact of caffeine on sleep, this means that come the mid-afternoon coffee craving, we can turn to a robust and flavoursome decaf blend with confidence.
