A Staggering 87% of Brits will Choose Solo Travel Next Year

A Staggering 87% of Brits will Choose Solo Travel Next Year
17 September 2020 James Brooke

A consumer survey by El Camino reveals that Covid-19 has changed the way Brits will travel next year, with safe and solo travel a top priority.

  • Solo travel is likely to rise, as almost 9 in 10 Brits would prefer to travel alone next year
  • Considered by many to be safe travel destinations, New Zealand and Australia tie for #1 spot as the next destinations to visit
  • Wildlife, adventure and exploration see 75% of Brits voting the Galapagos Islands as their dream trip for 2021

While solo travel isn’t a new concept, the global pandemic has increased traveller demand for it, according to the latest consumer survey by El Camino, the original travel bracelet brand, which revealed that 87% of Brits would chose to travel alone next year.

In addition, the survey showed that Brits are far more likely to book trips to countries deemed “safe”, once travel restrictions have lifted, with New Zealand and Australia tied for first place as Brits’ favoured next travel destinations.

Likely factors behind the winning countries include English as the primary language, robust healthcare systems to fall back on if required, and vast swathes of beautiful (and secluded) countryside to enjoy.

Candace Kellough, co-founder of El Camino, says: “Our recent survey has revealed some interesting insights into the travel preferences of consumers. While we’re not surprised by the results, it’s been interesting to learn that group travel has lost its appeal, as almost 90% of respondents are considering going solo. There are several benefits of travelling alone, but we believe being cooped up for so many months during lockdown has likely led to the desire to spend time solo next year.”

Candace added: “The destinations in which Brits wish to travel to has also been impacted by Covid-19. Though loved by Brits for many years and regularly featuring on bucket lists, it’s likely the New Zealand government’s swift lockdown action and comparatively low death rate, was a key factor for Brits naming New Zealand as one of their top choice destinations next year.

“It’s interesting that Australia is still a top contender, ranking joint first place, given further lockdown measures put into place in Victoria, but again, swift action and the government’s handling of the situation undoubtably influenced the survey’s findings.”

Exotic destinations are not completely off the bucket list however, with 75% of those polled voting the Galapagos Islands as their dream trip for 2021. The cluster of remote volcanic islands, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, has a population of just 25,000 people. Furthermore, it’s secluded enough to be a haven for wildlife unique to the archipelago. With open waters and unspoilt islands to explore, it’s little wonder the Galapagos Islands appeal to our inner adventurer.

Candace adds: “The Galapagos Islands has natural appeal to those looking for a unique escape; we’re seeing evidence that people want to experience nature and the great outdoors more. If anything, the pandemic has shown us the importance of getting outside, enjoying the fresh air and keeping a safe distance. Particularly for those without a garden or countryside on their doorstep, the need to get outdoors has only become more important.”
