Crazy for Cornwall: 1 in 3 Brits Planning a Trip to the Coast

Crazy for Cornwall: 1 in 3 Brits Planning a Trip to the Coast
16 September 2020 James Brooke

A consumer survey by El Camino reveals that Cornwall is well and truly the favourite staycation destination.

  • 1 in 3 Brits want to visit the Cornish coast for their next holiday
  • 75% Brits name Cornwall as their favourite UK destination
  • 50% would prefer to stay in a hotel
  • 50% would prefer to glamp

It will come as little surprise that the UK is the top destination on Brits’ vacation wish list, with the resurgence of the traditional ‘staycation’ over recent years coinciding with the global pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions. According to the latest consumer survey by El Camino, the original travel bracelet brand, one area in particular seems to have captured the nation’s heart like no other – Cornwall.

In fact, 1 in 3 Brits cited Cornwall as next on their travel wish list and 75% named it their favourite UK destination for a summer holiday. It’s unsurprising that the breath-taking beaches, charming towns, delicious food and laid-back vibe have such universal appeal.

As a nation we’re split on the perfect way to enjoy a Cornish break – 50% opting for a traditional hotel and 50% for a unique glamping experience.

Candace Kellough, co-founder of El Camino, says: “We well understand the charm and pull of Cornwall, being based here ourselves, but it’s still interesting to see that it’s such a favourite of so many British people.

“The combination of pebbled coves and sandy beaches, unrivalled produce and destination restaurants, the juxtaposition of the old and familiar with the new and undiscovered – Cornwall really does have it all.”

Whilst Cornwall is the firm favourite, the survey also revealed Brits have their eye on visits to the Scottish Highlands, Dorset, Devon and Wales.

Candace adds: “Having spent so many months cooped up – the desire for wide open spaces, fresh air, adventure and even nostalgia for that Great British seaside holiday many experienced as children isn’t surprising.

“After a year of uncertainty, and with the path ahead still unclear, we’re all re-learning the joy of life’s simple pleasures.”
