Isle of Opportunity: Vastint UK Gains Consent for Additional 290,000ft² Office Space in East London as First Tenant Moves In
15 July 2020 James Brooke

Vastint UK has secured planning consent for a significant second phase of commercial space at its east London multi-use development, Sugar House Island.

The 26-acre mixed-use development just minutes from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has received planning consent for three commercial blocks up to seven storeys tall, that will deliver 290,000ft² of new office space and 40,000 ft2 flexible-use floorspace at street level.

Built speculatively and designed by award-winning architect CJCT, construction is due to start in autumn 2020 and completed by 2023, adding to the 100,000ft² of office space completed in Sugar House Island’s first phase: Dane’s Yard.

Andrew Cobden, MD of Vastint UK, said: “The grant of consent by LLDC enables Sugar House Island to further strengthen east London as an optimal location for occupiers seeking well-connected offices, built to a human scale.

“The addition of this trio of larger office buildings to those in Dane’s Yard will create employment opportunities within Stratford, served by a large range of transport alternatives and surrounded by a wealth of facilities, communal outdoor spaces and canals.”

Global publisher takes occupancy as first Sugar House Island tenant.

In the same week, Sugar House Island officially opened with its first commercial tenant. After 20 years residing in King’s Cross, global publisher Phaidon has taken occupancy of offices in Dane’s Yard.

Drawing creative businesses to this unique corner of London, Phaidon’s move cements Sugar House Island as a new hotspot for forward-thinking businesses and follows a creative shift towards east London.

James Booth-Clibborn, MD of Phaidon, said: “Joining a host of world-leading cultural and educational organisations, Phaidon’s choice of destination provides the perfect springboard for our innovative and ground-breaking publishing programme.”

Truly mixed-use: construction begins on new Sugar House Island primary school.

This month Vastint UK starts construction of Sugar House Island’s new primary school. Welcome news for families in the local area, the school will provide 420 school places ready for the 2021/2022 academic year.

“We have carefully curated Sugar House Island into a truly mixed-use district that is both characterful and connected to its history. As we aim to strike a balance between working, living and leisure. we’re pleased to see construction on the new primary school begin as development continues on our residential and commercial spaces,” continued Cobden.

Bounded by water, Sugar House Island is a distinctive, urban environment made up of diverse architecture and rich character, with nearly a thousand years’ history, and will be home to 624,000sq ft of office space, 1,200 riverside apartments, shops and amenities with the new primary school.
