Take the Ultimate Icelandic Cycling Challenge with WOW air
21 November 2016 James Brooke

10% off travel to the sixth edition of the WOW Cyclothon using promo code WOWCYCLOTHON.

Adventurous UK cyclists are encouraged to get on their bikes and join in the next annual WOW Cyclothon, one of the largest ultra-cycling competitions in the world, taking place under Iceland’s iconic midnight sun from 20-23 June 2017.

Attracting keen cyclists from around the world looking for exciting new conditions to ride, WOW Cyclothon is the largest and longest road race in Iceland, spanning over 1,358 km, in a total time of less than 84 hours. The race is divided into three categories, catering to riders of varying abilities; A-category (4-person relay with two drivers), B-category (10-person relay) and an individual category.

Since its conception in 2012 by Skúli Mogensen, founder and CEO of WOW air, the event has brought together cycling partners, friends and even co-workers to compete together towards a common goal. This year 1,100 entrants in more than 100 teams got involved to soak up the breath-taking Icelandic scenery, cycling past awe-inspiring waterfalls, geysers, sulphur pools, and mountains, whilst raising funds for a good cause. In 2016 funds were raised for Hjólakraftur, an Icelandic organization that promotes cycling among young people.

A number of notable entrants also participated in this year‘s event, including 17-time Tour De France competitor and team mate of Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie – who came out of retirement to compete with his four person team. Another particpant, Ólafur Einar Ólafsson returned to the race, despite having a visual imparement to the range of just 15%.

As the main race sponsor, WOW air awards flight tickets as prizes for each member of the winning female and male teams. Open to cyclists of all abilities with all types of bikes, registration is now open and costs £496 (70,000 ISK) for teams of four, £886 (125,000 ISK) for teams of ten and £212 (30,000 ISK) for a solo team.

The WOWCYCLOTHON promo code is valid for return trips from London Gatwick, Bristol and Edinburgh to Keflavik taking place between 15 June 2017 and 28 June 2017. The code will remain valid for bookings made between now and 1 March 2016. Those using the code also get free extra check in luggage (max. 20 kg) and a bicycle bag, meaning they can take their bike on the plane for no extra charge.
