GoFundMe Campaign in Memory of Jo Cox Raises £62,000 in Just Four Hours

GoFundMe Campaign in Memory of Jo Cox Raises £62,000 in Just Four Hours
17 June 2016 James Brooke

A GoFundMe campaign set up in celebration and memory of MP Jo Cox, who was tragically stabbed this week, has raised £62k in just four hours: www.gofundme.com/jocox

The GoFundMe page, which was set up by Jo’s friends and family in close collaboration with her husband Brendan Fox, is raising funds to support charities closest to her heart, as chosen by her family:

  • The Royal Voluntary Service, to support volunteers helping combat loneliness in Jo’s constituency, Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire
  • HOPE not hate, who seek to challenge and defeat the politics of hate and extremism within local communities across Britain
  • The White Helmets: volunteer search and rescue workers in Syria. Unarmed and neutral, these heroes have saved more than 51,000 lives from under the rubble and bring hope to the region

Jo’s friends and family, who set up the page said: “We are overwhelmed by everyone’s incredible generosity and so grateful for all your donations.”

Kelsea Little, spokesperson for GoFundMe.com said: “We were saddened to hear about the tragic death of Jo Cox this week. It’s amazing to see how many people have come together to raise money for the charity’s closest to Jo’s heart in her memory. Our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly difficult time.”

To date, GoFundMe fundraisers have raised over £1billion for a whole host of different causes from medical expenses, education costs, volunteer programmes and youth sports to memorials and even pets.

Just last week, a campaign raising money for the victims of the Pulse Shooting in Orlando raised over $5 million in five days making it the largest and fastest crowd-funding appeal ever, demonstrating the positive out-pouring of support around the world following the heinous attack.
