Employment expert at youth-led work and travel brand, JENZA, sorts ski season fact from fiction.

Adventure seekers looking to spend a winter abroad know untouched snow and mountain joy beckons, yet many miss the call due to a lack of ski experience. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a novice looking to learn, a ski season is a great way to hit the slopes while gaining work experience.

So, to help you sort ski season fact from fiction, Kristian Webber, employment expert at youth-led work and travel brand, JENZA is helping to debunk common misconceptions once and for all.

Kristian says: “One of the most common misconceptions we hear from young travellers considering a winter working holiday is that they don’t have the skills or experience needed to work at a ski resort.

Most are shocked to learn that there are a variety of roles available aside from being a ski instructor.

Whether you’re a powder hound, newbie skier, or avid avoider of the slopes, the white peaks of Whistler, Canada and fresh powder snow in Furano, Hokkaido, Japan are the perfect playground for the winter.”

Discover what other common myths might be holding you back below…

  • Myth: Ski equipment is too expensive

While it is easy to spend hundreds of pounds on expensive ski equipment, budget-friendly options exist, too. Investing in quality gear is important for safety, and if you are willing to do some digging in charity shops, vintage fairs, and online platforms like Facebook Marketplace, you can find some excellent equipment for a fraction of the price.

Alternatively, consider renting equipment in destination. You’ll not only save on pricey luggage costs but have the added benefit of being able to swap out gear as needed, too.

  • Myth: I have to be a pro skier

Totally false! A ski season isn’t just for those with enough experience and necessary qualifications to teach. Resort roles include the likes of spa attendant, concierge, snow clearer and chalet host. These roles don’t require any previous ski experience to get on the slopes, but those with a desire to learn are sure to have a blast.

  • Myth: I’ll have no money

A ski season is the perfect opportunity to combine work and play but, ultimately, availability of funds will always depend on your own spending habits. So, whether you choose to spend it all at après ski or save it for a snowy day is totally up to you.

  • Myth: I need to be super fit

A certain level of fitness is required if you wish to spend time on the slopes, but there’s no need to be elite athlete fit. Like with any physical activity, expert guidance, a good night’s sleep, proper fuelling, and drinking plenty of water are important for staying healthy and happy while enjoying breathtaking views and long runs down the mountain.

  • Myth: A ski season doesn’t add value to my CV

A working holiday is a great way to show drive, passion, and learned skills. The specific value added could range from customer service experience and teaching opportunities to boosting language skills and team management practice. If you have a future career in mind, think about what skills you hope to gain long term and look for roles and opportunities that will offer you the right exposure.

So, whether you’ve been skiing for years, or you are just finding your (ski-boot) footing, there’s a ski season role out there for you.
