100ml Liquid Rule Burning a Hole in Holidaymakers’ Pockets

  • 100ml liquid rule costs holidaymakers 218% more when preparing for a trip

  • No-fly holidays can keep trip costs low this summer

From booking last-minute deals to slipping a bread roll in your pocket at the buffet, many of us are looking for ways to keep our spending low when heading on a holiday amidst the cost-of-living crisis. One of the classic ways to save is by only taking hand or cabin luggage – but this could end up costing you more than you think thanks to the dreaded liquid limits.

The 100ml liquid rule, which has been re-introduced for passengers travelling from all UK airports despite the fact that many airports now have new 3D scanners in operation, is seeing many holidaymakers shed out a small fortune in airport shops and duty free – with travel-sized minis costing on average 218 per cent more than full sized products per bottle*. Unless your face wash, sun cream and shampoo are all under the limit and can be squeezed into one small plastic resealable bag, the only option is to leave them at home or pay the price when travelling with hand or cabin luggage.

So, rather than paying more than the cost of your plane ticket to bring your liquids with you, why not opt for a holiday that enables you to take as many bags as you like with you at no extra cost? With plenty of choice for no-fly holidays available, forking out a small fortune to use your liquids will be a thing of the past.

To help travellers curb the cost of airport shopping, Bob McGowan, Head of Operations at the UK’s leading affordable quality no-fly cruise line, Ambassador Cruise Line, has compiled his top ten must-have liquid items for packing ahead of a holiday

  1. Sun Cream / SPF
For almost any summer destination, sun cream is an absolute holiday essential. Nobody wants to head to dinner looking like an overcooked lobster. Whilst travel-sized bottles can be useful for keeping you protected on the first day, to keep your skin adequately shielded from the rays throughout the whole trip, a big bottle of delicious smelling sun cream is definitely required.
  2. Full-sized Shampoo and Conditioner
Much like football teams, people can be very loyal to their choice of hair care products. And those with curly, dry, thin, flat, blonde hair (the list goes on…) more often than not, need a whole host of products beyond those provided by the hotel, to ensure their hair plays ball. Heading on a no-fly holiday means that bringing an entire bag full of hair care products is on the cards.
  3. Favourite Perfume or Cologne
Whether heading away with your beau or hoping for a holiday romance, smelling good is essential. A signature scent is part of many people’s daily routines but with most bottles being 50ml or over and in chunky bottles, perfume or aftershave rarely fit in one resealable bag. Therefore, the only option when flying overseas with hand luggage is to leave it behind or grab a miniature (but far more expensive) version on the way out.
  4. Moisturiser
Keeping your skin hydrated is critical after a long journey or a full day sprawled out on a sun lounger, but finding moisturiser in a foreign supermarket when you can’t read the bottles can be a nightmare. Being able to pop your moisturiser in your bag will not only keep you feeling silky smooth all holiday but is critical for sunburn situations!
  5. Mouthwash
Nobody wants smelly breath whilst away. Whether enjoying croissants for breakfast in Brest, Pastels del Natas in Porto or tucking into a gelato in Gerona, keeping your breath fresh with a full bottle of mouthwash on hand is a helpful healthy habit.
  6. Body Wash
There’s no better feeling after a day on the beach than emerging from the shower clean and refreshed (most probably with a glass of wine to hand), but that might not be possible without your favourite body wash. Whether you’re a doting Dove fan or an Imperial Leather lush, sometimes only one type will do.
  7. Beauty Products
From bringing along a liquid foundation to keep your skin looking flawless or a pot of hair gel to add some much-needed volume, more often than not, beauty products fall over the 100ml rule. And with some of these items carrying a hefty price tag, it’s not one you’ll want to be replacing each time you go away.
  8. Nail Polish Remover
When adventuring overseas, nails often get knocked about and there’s nothing worse than having a chipped manicure. Taking a bottle of nail polish remover can not only be a great way to fix scuffs, scratches and chips but it also helps ensure your outfit is always on point and your nail coordination never falters.
  9. Crucial Condiments
Most holiday destinations have ketchup and mayo available, but from time to time the one sauce you crave is nowhere to be found. From brown sauce, to sweet chilli, to soy sauce, packing an emergency bottle in your bag can be the home-from-home comfort you need in a crisis.
  10. Marmite
For those that LOVE it – Marmite is one of those things impossible to replicate whilst abroad. Whether spreading it on toast or popping into a sandwich for a busy day of exploring, some people simply won’t go anywhere without the gloopy spread in tow.To avoid the hassle of the 100ml liquid limits, book a no-fly holiday this summer.
