2019 Flight Centre Schools Triathlon Smashes its Fundraising Record

2019 Flight Centre Schools Triathlon Smashes its Fundraising Record
10 June 2019 James Brooke

The UK’s largest sporting fundraising event dedicated to young people breaks through £1 million.

  • £1 million raised by 9,000 young people since the event started four years ago
  • This year, 3,330 young people aged between 7-13 from more than 65 schools took part
  • A record breaking £400,000 fundraised for the organising charity Restless Development, and many local school charities
  • Attended by 15,000 spectators

The most successful Flight Centre Schools Triathlon series to date has finished after a grand final event at Marlborough College.

The 2019 Flight Centre Schools Triathlon took place over three weekends in April and May. 3,330 children took part in 2019 bringing the total number of participants in the last four years to more than 9,000.

Royal Russell, Croydon; Bradfield College, Berkshire; Charterhouse, Godalming; and Marlborough College, Wiltshire generously gave the event full access to their amazing campuses and provided dozens of volunteers to make sure the events ran smoothly.

Flight Centre, Knight Frank, Cazenove Capital Management and Marlborough Summer School generously sponsor the event which ensures the money raised by the children can go directly to Restless Development as the organising charity and lots more local school charities.

Jim Sewell, Founder of the Flight Centre Schools Triathlon, said:

“We are so proud of all the children to have swum, run and cycled their way to raising £1 million. To be the UK’s largest sporting fundraiser just for children within four years of launching is absolutely amazing.

We cannot thank each of the host schools enough for their support and encouragement of the event. And we are lucky to work with a brilliant group of sponsors who share our vision for growing the event and who cover the costs of the events so all money raised through the children’s hard work goes to charity.”

Chris Galanty, Managing Director of Flight Centre Europe and South Africa, congratulated the participants

“We could not be prouder to have supported the Flight Centre Schools Triathlon since its inception four years ago. It is a phenomenal event and having raised £1 million in just four years just shows how brilliant young people are. We also love getting out of the store for the day and interacting with our local communities in a different way. And nothing makes us happier than seeing families having a fun time together – either here at home or away!”

Perry Maddox, CEO of Restless Development, the global charity for youth led change that organises the event said:

“The triathlons represent everything Restless Development is about – the power of young people. Thanks to the money raised we have helped young people in developing countries help themselves by setting up businesses and lifting themselves, and their families, out of poverty. We have helped them become leaders in their own communities and spearhead the change they want to see in the world when it comes HIV/AIDS, women’s rights or climate change. In the four years since the triathlons started we’ve trained and supported over 15,000 young leaders around the world and they have reached over 4.5 million people. The 9,000 young people who took part in the triathlons have changed the world for the better.  A huge thank you from us all to the participants, families, schools and sponsors who make the Flight Centre Schools Triathlon such a success.  We couldn’t do it without you.”
