Local Children Raise £100,000 For Charity

Local Children Raise £100,000 For Charity
20 May 2019 James Brooke

Marlborough College hosts the annual Flight Centre Schools Triathlon again.

The Flight Centre Schools Triathlon series has already raised an amazing £1m since it started four years ago.

On Sunday 19 May almost 1,100 children took part in the triathlon event at Marlborough College, raising £100,000 for Restless Development and other charities.

Louise Moelwyn-Hughes, Master of Marlborough College, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Flight Centre Schools Triathlon back to the College. It has been wonderful to see so many children participating with such enthusiasm and determination and, in turn, raising money to help other children around the world. I thank all pupils, staff and families who gave of their time so generously to help and make this event such a huge success.”

This was the final triathlon of four in the 2019 series. 3,300 children from over 50 schools took part and they estimate they will raise £400,000 this year.

The Flight Centre Schools Triathlon supports Restless Development, an international development charity that puts young people at the very heart of dealing with the issues that affect them, their communities, and their countries. The events will raise funds for Restless Development and the chosen charities of the host and participating schools.

Jim Sewell, founder of the Flight Centre Schools Triathlon, said: “It is great to be back at Marlborough College again.  The way they have opened up the College and their amazing campus to us and the children is fantastic. They have been incredibly generous which makes it possible for us to make sure all the money raised by the children taking part can go to the charities which benefit.  There is something wonderful about children really understanding what a difference their actions can make. The Flight Centre Schools Triathlon is getting bigger every year – more than 9,000 participants have taken part since we started. We are well on our way to making this one of the biggest sporting fundraisers for the children in the UK, thanks in no small part to the generous hospitality of our host schools, such as Marlborough, and the ongoing support from Flight Centre Travel Group.”

Chris Galanty, Managing Director of Flight Centre Europe and South Africa, said: “We love that children are front and centre at these triathlons and we are proud to play our part in making them happen. This is the fourth year we’ve been involved in the triathlons and our people really enjoy getting out of the store for the day and interacting with their local communities in a different way. And nothing makes us happier than seeing families having a fun time together – either here at home or away!”
