The Rise of ‘Bite-Sized Breaks’ for Brits

The Rise of ‘Bite-Sized Breaks’ for Brits
17 September 2018 admin_rooster

With more and more Brits taking shorter and more frequent holidays, Flightgiftcard lists the next best bucket list destinations for the new generation of Serial Short Breakers.

It’s official – ‘Serial Short Breaking’ has become a national pastime. Flightgiftcard, the world’s only cross-airline gift card, has reported a boom in bookings for bite-sized breaks, as Brits opt to take lots of short vacations throughout the year, rather than a traditional two-week summer holiday.

Data from Flightgiftcard shows that in the past six months, 54% of bookings by Brits were for trips lasting three days or less, while just 15% were for trips of 10 days or more.

Loes Daniels, CEO of Flightgiftcard, says: “Thanks to the abundance of cheap flights and no-frills airlines, it’s never been easier to quench our wanderlust. These more accessible travel options, coupled with enviable eye-catching destination shots on social media are fuelling the travel junkie in us all.”

To provide inspiration for our ever expanding travel checklists, Flightgiftcard has compiled a guide to the best new bite-sized break destinations that are sure to transform long weekends into long lasting memories…

1. Explore Dalmatia by Water

Hiking, running, biking – whatever your activity of choice; Croatia’s beautiful landscape is just waiting to be explored. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for a swimming tour around the Sibenik archipelago in Dalmatia. Surely there’s no better way to see this stunning area of Croatia than by diving into the Adriatic’s turquoise waters! The rocky islets of Kornati National Park are well worth exploring, along with the waterfalls of Krka National Park for a refreshing dip.

2. Visit the Best in Travel city

Forget Barcelona and Madrid, a weekend jaunt to Spain this year is all about Seville. Voted number one by Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel city for 2018, the Andalusian capital has a grand complex of mini-canals and bridges, gothic architecture, flamenco dancing and horse drawn carriage rides through the whimsical streets, plus famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alcázar Palace.

3. A Destination that has Something for Everyone…

A weekend in Romania is the ultimate break for those that want something a little different. Visitors should first head to Bran Castle, the picturesque mythical dwelling of Count Dracula and the lesser known Peleș Castle, which is easily one of the most charming castles in Europe and a fantastic example of Neo-Renaissance architecture.

Hiking is huge in Romania; take in the fresh air and spectacular scenery on a hiking trail of the Carpathian Mountains – there are many options from beginners to advanced. If all the exercise makes you hungry, Romanian cuisine is hearty, comforting and utterly delicious. Sample one of the nation’s favourite dishes, ‘papanasi’; dubbed the next big thing it is a type of creamy doughnut served in cream and topped with berry jam before it reaches the UK.

4. Georgia on My Mind

The Georgian capital, Tbilisi, is having something of a renaissance at the moment. Since Georgia’s emergence as a democratic republic in 2003, the country has rid the post-Soviet government and image. Set against a dramatic deep valley of the Mtkvari River, Tbilisi is home to picturesque architecture, an ever-changing and lively arts and cultural scene and welcoming locals. The city has adapted to increased tourism in recent years, with spruced-up bars, restaurants and galleries, modernised transport, and lodgings from backpacker hostels to international five-star hotels.

The Old Town has stood the test of time, and is a relic of the ancient Eurasian crossroads, with winding lanes, balconied houses, leafy squares and imposing churches dating back to the 17th century. Each neighbourhood has retained a village-like feel and community atmosphere, with something new around every corner. Be sure to visit the 1930s style bus stations, completely inefficient but well worth a visit!

5. Foodie Delights in Oslo

Oslo isn’t a cheap city, but it should be on every foodie’s bucket list. Only two hours’ flight away, the Norwegian capital is ideal for a weekend break, offering visitors the chance to sample classic, everyday dishes such as fårikål (lamb and cabbage stew), lapskaus (brown stew), kjøttkaker (large Norwegian meatballs) and steamed salmonor fish soup, Kaffistova. Head away from the main tourist areas to Grünerløkka, one of Oslo’s trendiest areas, known for its stylish bars and hip cafes offering dishes at cut-prices.

If you’re after high-end dining, try out Maaemo, serving seasonal Norwegian dishes with wine pairings, or Restaurant Fjord, for a frequently changing menu centred around a Norwegian staple – fish!
